The year 2025 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Journal of Endodontics. Ahead of this milestone, AAE Assistant Director of Communications & Publishing Elisabeth Lisican asked JOE Associate Editor Dr. Anita Aminoshariae to reflect on her memorable moments and look ahead to the future of the Journal.

Role and Contributions

Elisabeth Lisican: Can you share your journey and how you became a member of the Editorial Board Committee for the Journal of Endodontics? What specific roles and responsibilities do you have as an Editorial Board member?
Dr. Anita Aminoshariae: Upon receiving my Board certification, I became a reviewer for the Journal of Endodontics‘ Scientific Advisory Board. My contributions have involved evaluating manuscripts, providing constructive feedback, and upholding the Journal‘s high standards.

Experiences and Highlights

Lisican: What have been some of the most rewarding experiences during your tenure on the Editorial Board?
Dr. Aminoshariae: Participating in the peer-review process has been incredibly rewarding, allowing me to stay at the forefront of endodontic research and contribute to the dissemination of knowledge

Challenges and Solutions

Lisican: What are some of the common challenges you face in your role, and how do you address them? How do you ensure the quality and integrity of the research published in the Journal?
Dr. Aminoshariae: Balancing the thorough review process with my professional responsibilities has been challenging, yet it has enhanced my time management skills. Some of the challenges:

  • Ensuring quality and integrity of published articles: Maintaining high standards in the face of varying submission quality.
    Solution: Implementing rigorous peer-review process and providing clear guidelines for reviewers. We have also incorporated a biostatistician to help us out with some of the difficulties with statistical analysis
  • Managing conflicts of interest: ensuring unbiased review and publication
    Solution: enforcing conflict-of-interest policies and guidelines
  • Balancing workload: handling a large volume of submission
    Solution: The Editor-in-Chief does a great job disturbing and delegating tasks effectively
  • Staying updated with advances: keeping up with the latest research
    Solution: all the AE members are engaged with meaningful research, advancement and collaborative projects
  • Additional ethical issues: identifying plagiarism, data fabrication
    Solution: we use plagiarism detection software and adhere to strict ethical guidelines

Lisican: In your opinion, how has the Journal of Endodontics influenced the field of endodontics? Can you provide examples of how the Journal has advanced endodontic research and practice?
Dr. Aminoshariae:

  1. Advancing Research: Publishing cutting-edge studies and findings that drive innovations and improvements in endodontic practice.
  2. Setting Standards: Establishing benchmarks for clinical procedures and materials, guiding best practices.
  3. Educational Impact: Serving as a vital resource for dental educators and students, fostering knowledge and skills development.

Lisican: What trends or advancements do you anticipate in endodontic research in the coming years? How do you see the Journal of Endodontics adapting to these changes?
Dr. Aminoshariae:

  • Technological Advancements: AI in diagnosis and aid in decision-making process. Use of 3D imaging, digital radiography, and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for better diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Regenerative Endodontics: Focus on techniques that regenerate damaged tissues and promote healing.
  • Minimally Invasive Techniques: Emphasis on preserving natural tooth structure using advanced tools and methods.
  • Biomaterials: Development of biocompatible materials for root canal fillings and sealing.
  • Clinical Research: Ongoing studies to improve treatment outcomes and patient care.
  • Education and Training: Enhanced training programs incorporating AI technologies and methodologies

I aim to continue supporting the Journal by fostering innovative research and encouraging emerging scholars.

Lisican: What advice would you give to researchers looking to publish their work in the Journal of Endodontics? What common mistakes should authors avoid when submitting their manuscripts?
Dr. Aminoshariae: My advice to authors is to focus on clarity, rigor, and relevance in their submissions. Peer feedback is invaluable—embrace it to enhance your work.

Lisican: How has your involvement with the Journal of Endodontics impacted your own professional development and research? What do you enjoy most about being a part of the Editorial Board?
Dr. Aminoshariae: Turning 50 alongside the Journal’s milestone is personally significant and meaningful to me. It symbolizes my journey and growth within the endodontic community. I am proud of our contributions and especially proud of our Editor-in-Chief’s tireless commitment and leadership in continuing to advance the specialty and science of Endodontics.

Dr. Aminoshariae: I find this milestone meaningful for many personal and professional reasons.

The 50th anniversary of the Journal of Endodontics marks a significant milestone, celebrating five decades of contributions, achievements, and longevity, which enhances the credibility and prestige of Endodontics. This anniversary highlights the journal’s role in advancing research, setting clinical standards, and promoting education within endodontics. It reflects on the progress made, the impact of published studies on improving endodontic practices, and the Journal’s influence on global collaboration among dental professionals. Additionally, it serves as an opportunity to look forward to future advancements and continued excellence in the field.

Dr. Aminoshariae: I am most proud of working with my dedicated and talented colleagues. The Endodontic Editorial Board Staff is incredibly amazing, committed, and knowledgeable. I am proud of the Journal of Endodontics‘ commitment to advancing the field through high-quality research, fostering a global community of endodontists, and setting clinical standards that improve patient care. Our rigorous peer-review process has ensured the publication of groundbreaking studies that have shaped modern endodontic practices.
